Hong Kong Port Cargo Volume Fell 2 Percent in Third Quarter

Hong Kong’s total port cargo volume in the third quarter was 69.4 million metric tons (about 76.5 million tons), a 2 percent decrease compared with the same period in 2011, according to the Census and Statistics Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government.

Quarterly imported cargo remained flat year-over-year at 44.4 million tons, and exported cargo decreased by 4 percent to 32.1 million tons.

In the first nine months of 2012, total port cargo throughput was 223.8 million tons, falling 2 percent from last year. Inbound cargo dropped 1 percent to 129.1 million tons, and outbound cargo decreased 2 percent to 94.7 million tons.

The port handled 5.9 million 20-foot-equivalent units in the third quarter, representing a 7 percent decrease from the same period in 2011. From January to September, the port handled 17.5 million TEUs, falling 4 percent compared with last year.
