Container throughput at the South Korea’s Busan port in 2011 rose 14 percent year-over-year, and the North Asian transhipment hub expects more than 8 percent traffic growth this year.
The port handled 16,175,307 20-foot equivalents units last year and aims to boost traffic to more than 17.5 million TEUs in 2012. The port plans to build four berths to handle more liner services.
“Among the world’s top ten ports, it is the Port of Busan that last year showed the strongest growth,” said BPA Marketing Director Ho Chul Park. “Our varied international marketing activities and many ongoing expansion projects are propelling us toward our goal of becoming Northeast Asia’s hub port.”
Busan handled roughly 75 percent of South Korea's total container traffic in 2011, which reached 21.6 million TEUs. Total cargo throughput at South Korea’s ports hit a record 1.3 billion metric tons last year, up 8 percent year-over-year.
