APM Terminals took over operations Wednesday of Scandinavia’s largest container terminal at Sweden’s Port of Gothenburg.
The facility handles about 800,000 containers per year, roughly 60 percent of Sweden’s total container traffic, while serving as a key gateway for Swedish and Norwegian inland points. Formerly known as the Skandia Container Terminal, it has been renamed APM Terminals Gothenburg.
The Port of Gothenburg, which will continue to own the terminal’s land, quays and buildings, awarded a 25-year concession agreement for the deep-water facility’s management and operations to APM Terminals in October. APM plans to invest $115 million over the next five years, mostly on equipment to make the port more competitive as a North West European hub for the Nordic and Baltic markets.
The investment includes the purchase of three new super-post-Panamax cranes to handle the largest vessels entering into service. Gothenburg is served by 24 daily rail services to commercial and industrial centers in Sweden and neighboring Norway.
Keld Pedersen will take over as managing director of APM Terminals Gothenburg on Feb. 17, when the current CEO, Sven Porelius, leaves the company. Pedersen comes back to his native Denmark from his most recent post as chief operating officer at the Port of Tanjung Pelepas in Malaysia for the last five years.
