Abu Dhabi’s Khalifa Port Receives First Container Ship Call

Abu Dhabi’s Khalifa Port has received its first container vessel call.

The new Middle East gateway, located in the United Arab Emirates and designed to handle traffic for the huge new Khalifa Industrial Zone, will have an initial capacity of 2 million 20-foot-equivalent units per annum when it becomes fully operational in September.

Evergreen Line’s 4,173-TEU Ever Dynamic docked at the port en route from Shanghai as part of the Abu Dhabi Ports Company’s operational trials.

Khalifa Port, which will also have an annual capacity of 12 million metric tons of non-containerized cargo, is set to replace existing facilities at Mina Zayed in Abu Dhabi. Total annual capacity is planned to gradually be increased through to 2030, when capacity is expected to have reached 15 million TEUs and 35 million metric tons of general cargo.

Future expansion plans also include a bunkering hub, breakbulk berths and more general cargo capacity.
