The Abu Dhabi Port Co. plans to open a port with an initial annual capacity of 2 million 20-foot equivalent units in the United Arab Emirates in late 2012.
The port is designed to be a gateway to the huge new Khalifa Industrial Zone, which is expected to drive port demand at Abu Dhabi in the decades ahead. The port, which will also have an annual capacity of 12 million metric tons of non-containerized cargo, is set to replace existing facilities at Mina Zayed in Abu Dhabi.
The semi-automated port is expected to have an annual capacity of 15 million TEUs and 35 millions of general cargo by 2030. Future expansion plans also include a bunkering hub, breakbulk berths and more general cargo capacity, said Mohamed Al Shamisi, vice president of ADP.
