Senate staffer would be CFO as department manages huge spending programs

President Obama plans to nominate Christopher P. Bertram as assistant transportation secretary for budget and programs and chief financial officer of the Department of Transportation, the White House announced.

The Department of Transportation is in the midst of preparing a huge infrastructure stimulus package, a high-speed rail push and is bracing for new multiyear funding legislation.

Bertram is on the staff of the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, and was previously the CFO at the Federal Aviation Administration. The Transportation post is subject to Senate confirmation.

In Bertram’s senate committee post, he has been responsible for legislation related to aviation, auto and highway safety, transportation security, railroads, and fuel efficiency standards for automobiles, the White House said.
