Operator to develop port for domestic needs, rename DP World Djazair

Global terminal operator DP World took control of operations at the Port of Algiers, Algeria, which will now be known as DP World Djazair.

The company earlier in November signed a concession agreement with the local authority to operate the two ports of Algiers and Djen Djen for 30 years.

Algiers, which handles more than 60 percent of the country’s external trade, will be developed further to cater primarily to domestic needs, while Djen Djen will serve as a transshipment hub for the Western Mediterranean.

“Port of Algiers, now DP World Djazair, has tremendous potential, and will play a critical role in facilitating Algeria’s growth and development,” the Dubai-based company stated.

The company is expected to take over operations at Djen Djen, to be renamed DP World Djen Djen, in late April.

DP World currently operates 49 terminals worldwide and handled 46.8 million TEUs in 2008, up 8 percent from 2007. It plans to augment overall capacity to 95 million TEUs over the next 10 years.
