CHARLESTON, S.C. — FEBRUARY 23, 2011 — Kontane Logistics, an industry leader in Third Party Logistics with offices in N.C., S.C. and Texas, has begun a partnership to support the preservation packaging, export and distribution services for MTU Detroit Diesel’s Graniteville, SC manufacturing plant. MTU is one of the world’s leading providers of diesel engines and drive, propulsion systems for ships, heavy-duty land and rail vehicles and distributed energy platforms. Kontane Logistics was selected as MTU’s service provider to conduct the export packaging services through the Port of Charleston. Specifically, the Kontane Logistics facility at 1000 Charleston Regional Parkway in Charleston will support MTU’s production of the Series 2000 and Series 4000 diesel engines.

“The opportunity for Kontane Logistics to create a vested partnership with MTU in South Carolina continues to foster the collaborative atmosphere created by organizations like the SCSPA, along with our other global supply chain partners in this evolving economy,” said Michael J. Stolarczyk, President of Kontane Logistics.

The logistics process initiates in MTU’s Graniteville, SC, manufacturing facility, where the Series 2000 and Series 4000 diesel engines are mounted before being transported by Kontane Logistics to their facility in Charleston. Upon receipt, the massive diesels undergo a thorough and stringent preservation packaging process that can entail strengthened, weatherproofed crates that safely house the diesel engines for up to five years, humidity indicators, dessicants, protective foil, foams, cardboard protectors, VCI coverings over bare ferrous materials and specific stenciling customized for each serial-numbered engine. MTU’s Series 2000 ranges from 5,000 to 10,000 lbs and the Series 4000 from 15,000 to 35,000 lbs per diesel engine, and the engines are deftly handled by Kontane Logistics’ in-house overhead hoist, which has a lift capacity of 22 tons, along with 25,000 lbs. capacity fork lift. Upon packaging completion and final inspection, the diesel engines are exported or stored, by serial number, until distribution. The skids and engineered crates are manufactured in Hickory, NC by parent company, Kontane, Inc.
