Weak air cargo demand has prompted MASkargo to deploy one of its new midrange freighters on a domestic route to help supply the oil and gas industry in Labuan, Malaysian Borneo.
The air cargo division of Malaysia Airlines, which has seen freight demand to Europe decline by a third this year and intra-Asia uplift fall by more than five percent, said the weekly A330-200 midrange freighter service would supplement its bellyhold services from Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
Mohd Yunus Idris, Chief Executive Officer of MASkargo, said the “badly depressed” air cargo sector had forced the company to rationalize routes and indentify new potential markets.
“Recent developments have indicated that the oil and gas industry will continue to be a major mover of the economy in Labuan,” he added.
“MASkargo’s available capacity and services will be supporting the robust offshore exploration and development activities,” he said.
