Port of Long Beach to Test Zero Emission Vehicles

The Port of Long Beach is joining a Calif.-based developer to test zero emission drayage and terminal tractor vehicles.

The port and Vision Motor Corporation of El Segundo, Calif., will develop and demonstrate a hydrogen fuel cell plug-in electric Class 8 truck for harbor drayage and a hydrogen fuel cell electric zero-emission terminal tractor for marine terminal work.

Two Southern California trucking companies, California Cartage Co. and TTSI, will operate the vehicles in the pilot project. Also, Vision Capacity of Texas will participate in development of the zero-emission terminal tractor.

The Port of Long Beach has committed $425,000 for the project. The Port of Los Angeles Harbor Commission will consider a $212,500 appropriation.

Participants will test the ability of the vehicles to move containers in the rigorous harbor drayage and marine terminal environment.
