Hapag-Lloyd Hikes India-South America Freight Rates

The Journal of Commerce Online - News Story
GRI of $500 per TEU to take effect Aug. 15

Hapag-Lloyd will apply a general rate increase on all cargo moving on its services from the Indian subcontinent and the Middle East to South America East Coast.

Effective Aug. 15, the planned increase will be $500 per 20-foot equivalent unit.

The move comes after Maersk Line announced a GRI on the same trade lane with increases of $200 per TEU and $400 per 40-foot dry container, effective July 15.

Separately, Geneva-based Mediterranean Shipping Company said it will impose an “equipment imbalance surcharge” on cargo shipped from the Far East to South America East Cost.

Starting Aug. 1, the surcharge will be $200 per TEU.
