Hapag-Lloyd Hikes India-Australia Freight Rates

German carrier to increase freight rates Aug. 1

Hapag-Lloyd will seek a general freight rate increase on all cargo moving on its services from the Indian subcontinent to Australia.

Starting Aug. 1, the planned increase will be $250 per 20-foot equivalent unit.

The increase comes on top of Hapag-Lloyd's previously announced GRI of the same amount on the route that took effect as of July 1.

The German carrier will also increase rates on cargo shipped from the Indian subcontinent to New Zealand by $250 per TEU, effective August 15.

The new GRIs will cover the trades from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka to all destinations in Australia and New Zealand.

In a separate trade notice, Maersk Line said it plans to apply a GRI on cargo shipped from India to South America East Coast. Effective July 15, the increase will be $200 per TEU and $400 per FEU.
