Haiti Relief Qualifies for Lower Rates

The Journal of Commerce Online - News Story
Federal Maritime Commission offers to expedite review of agreements

The Federal Maritime Commission on Tuesday reminded carriers, non-vessel-operating common carriers, forwarders and marine terminal operators they can waive or reduce tariffs and other fees for charitable shipments to Haiti.

According to the Shipping Act, only tariff increases require 30 days advance notice, unless the commission allows rates to take effect sooner.

The commission also said that it would expedite the review of carrier or marine terminal operator agreements for service to Haiti, or other industry requests to hasten relief efforts. The FMC also hopes to encourage new services to Haiti.
