Carrier moves forward with $863 million investment in environmentally friendly ships

The NYK Altair, the newest in NYK Line's series of vessels with a reduced environmental footprint, served Hamburg over the weekend on its maiden voyage.

The Japanese carrier said that it will continue to fulfill its commitment to invest $863 million in "environmentally friendly global transportation despite the prevailing economic headwinds."

NYK Line is No. 10 on the JOC list of Top 15 Container Fleet Operators.

The new NYK Altair follows NYK's introduction of the Auriga Leader and the unveiling of the company's concept ship, NYK Super Eco Ship 2030.

The NYK Altair incorporates some innovative developments in engine design. It is equipped with a DU-Wartsila RT Flex 96C propulsion engine, which operates with smokeless emissions at all running speeds; burns less fuel than conventional engines; has reduced nitrogen oxide emissions and efficient waste heat recovery.
