New reserves to bolster 500-strong USCG force, maintain port security

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano authorized the temporary activation of up to 900 U.S. Coast Guard reservists. They will join more than 500 Coast Guard members already serving in earthquake relief roles in Haiti.

The activations are for up to180 days. More than 100 of the newly activated reserves, expected to arrive within 96 hours of activation, will bolster port security operations at Port-au-Prince. Additional reserves will arrive within days to support other operations.

President Obama signed an executive order Jan.16 authorizing the activation of reserve military personnel to support relief and recovery operations in Haiti. Five Coast Guard cutters and numerous aircraft have been dispatched to Haiti to help with earthquake relief and recovery efforts.
