US Steel Exports Inched Up in October

U.S. steel exports slightly increased in October, up 0.7 percent from September, and were up 1.2 percent from October 2009, according to government data.

“Exports in October were essentially unchanged, with a 16.3 percent increase in exports to Mexico the primary reason for the small increase,” said David Phelps, president of the American Institute for International Steel.

Exports of steel for the year to date period continue to run ahead of 2009, increasing by 35.6 percent in the 10 months through October.

“Many markets for American-made steel consume high value products, such as the Asian market, whose imports of American steel were nearly 40 percent either alloy or stainless products,” Phelps said.

Total steel exports in October were 995,060 tons compared to 988,218 tons in September 2010.

Steel exports for the 10 months through October totaled 10.1 million tons, compared to 7.4 million tons in the same period last year.
