Maersk Line imposed general rate increases on cargo shipped from India to Mombasa, Kenya, and ports in West Africa.
The Danish carrier said rates from India to Mombasa will go up by $50 per 20-foot container and $100 per 40-foot container, starting Feb. 1. The planned increase on shipments from India to ports in West Africa will be $150 per 20-foot container and $250 per 40-foot container, effective March 1.
“While we are continuously endeavoring toward serving customers to the best of our capabilities, prevailing rates are proving to be difficult to sustain, especially in the current scenario,” Maersk India said in a trade advisory.
The move follows a $200 per-TEU GRI announcement by Mediterranean Shipping on the India-East Africa-Mozambique trades, starting Feb. 1.
