The Seamen’s Church Institute, in collaboration with New York’s Mount Sinai School of Medicine, today released a report from a clinical study on the effects of piracy on seafarers. The report aims to stimulate the maritime industry to develop human resources protocols to treat seafarers who had traumatic encounters with pirates.
Findings showed that most seafarers held captive or attacked by pirates experienced clinically significant symptoms afterwards, and fewer than one-third felt they had received adequate follow-up care.
There were 177 incidents reported to the International Maritime Bureau Piracy Reporting Center in the first six months of 2012.
