The World Shipping Council will keep Ron Widdows as chairman of its board through September 2012 after he steps down as group president and CEO of Neptune Orient Lines at the end of this year.
Widdows is being replaced at NOL in January by Ng Yat Chung, the former head of Singapore’s military. The WSC decided to extend Widdows term as chairman at its membership meeting in Seoul last week.
The board also elected Wan Min, managing director of COSCO Container Lines and Dr. Ottmar Gast, chairman of the executive board of Hamburg Sud to two-year terms on the board. The council re-elected Philip Chow of OOCL, Morten Englestoft of Maersk Line and Kranich of Hapag-Lloyd.
The other WSC board members include Thomas Crowley, Jr. of Crowley Maritime Corp.; Rafi Danieli of Zim Integrated Shipping Services; Y.M. Kim of Hanjin Shipping; Kenji Mizushima of NYK Line; as well as Widdows.
The WSC is an association of liner shipping companies with offices in Brussels and Washington, D.C. Its members transport over 90 percent of international containerized trade.
