Maersk Ltd. Gains Up to $2.1 Billion US Defense Contract

Maersk Line Ltd. was awarded an up to $2.1 billion contract from the U.S. Department of Defense to ship cargo internationally until the end of August 2013.

The contract to provide ocean shipping and intermodal distribution comes after the subsidiary of A.P. Moller-Maersk paid a $31.9 million settlement over allegations of overcharging the department in January.

APL, a subsidiary of NOL, received a potential $1.7 billion contract to provide similar services in the same period. American Roll-on Roll-off stands to receive up to $553 million for department work, while Farrell Lines won an up to $565 million contract. Liberty Global Logistics, Hapag-Lloyd, Central Gulf Lines, Foss International, Matson Navigation, Sealift and Transatlantic Linesare also slated to receive contract work
