Edward S. "Ned" Reed, executive director of the Port of New Orleans from 1970 to 1985, died April 20 of a cerebral aneurysm. He was 84.
Reed served as president of the American Association of Port Authorities and as a director of the International Association of Ports and Harbors.
He was a recipient of the Bertel Award for outstanding contributions to the Port of New Orleans, the Monte Leman Award from the Louisiana Civil Service League, and the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Tulane University.
A lifelong resident of New Orleans, Mr. Reed served in the Navy during World War II in China and the Pacific. He was a graduate of Tulane and of Harvard University’s Graduate School of Business.
In recent years for many summers he taught graduate classes in Port Management at the Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, Maine.
Among his varied interests, he was an expert target shooter and avid collector of rare guns and antique firearms.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia, three sons, and nine grandchildren.
Relatives and friends are invited to a celebration of life at the Harbour Room, Lake Marina Tower, 300 Lake Marina Drive, New Orleans, on Thursday, April 29, from 3 to 5 p.m. His remains were donated to the Tulane Medical School for research.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, the National Rifle Association or the Legacy Donor Foundation.
