Florida Governor Scott Visits Seaboard Marine

MIAMI — Florida Governor Rick Scott visited the Seaboard Marine terminal at PortMiami this morning and spoke about the jobs to be created by legislation he just signed that will eliminate sales taxes for equipment and machinery purchased by Florida manufacturers.

A strong supporter of seaports and international trade, it was the second time that Governor Scott has spent time at Seaboard Marine in the last eighteen months. In November, 2011, Scott spent nearly a full day working in the cargo securing and container clearance areas within the Seaboard Marine terminal where he learned of Seaboard Marine’s expertise in handling exported project cargo such as oversize construction and agricultural machinery. Wearing a hard hat and safety vest, Scott spent part of that day helping inspect and measure cargo as it was received into the Seaboard Marine facility.

In this morning’s visit, instead of actually working himself in terminal operations, Scott praised hard working Floridians, giving special recognition to the dozens of Seaboard Marine employees who surrounded the Governor as he made his remarks. Also attending were numerous of county and state officials, including Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez and Chairwoman of the Miami-Dade County Commission, Rebeca Sosa. In a dock area framed with Seaboard Marine containers and other cargoes destined for export, Scott thanked Seaboard Marine for inviting him to Miami to share his views.

Governor Scott focused most of his comments on growing jobs in Florida. Specifically, how creating a better and lower tax environment for manufacturers will improve employment throughout the state, not just at factories but also those involved within trade and transportation. Scott noted how an improved manufacturing climate will help Florida exports and the high-paying jobs created by the seaports throughout the state. Scott also commended PortMiami for its growth and contribution to job generation.

Bill Johnson, Director of PortMiami, repeatedly thanked Seaboard Marine for its cooperation in not just making Governor Scott’s visit a success but for being a strong and loyal partner of PortMiami. Johnson specifically noted how Seaboard Marine continually makes a positive economic impact to Miami-Dade County and all of South Florida.

Edward Gonzalez, Seaboard Marine President said, “It was a proud day for Seaboard Marine to once again host Governor Scott. Coming on the heels of President Obama’s visit to PortMiami six weeks ago, it is great to see our elected officials recognize the importance of trade and transportation infrastructure in creating economic growth. Our employees were thrilled to again welcome Governor Scott to our PortMiami facility and be recognized and acknowledged by him. Our door is always open for the Governor to return.”
