MOL Gets Nod for Ballast Water Treatment System

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines has received approval in concept from Nippon Kaiji Kyokai for the installation of a packaged container ballast water treatment system that can fit in a vessel’s cargo hold.

It is a joint technical development with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and is meant to shorten the work required for preliminary inspection, reduce installation time compared with installing a system in a vessel’s engine room and provide a solution for vessels with limited engine room space. Commercially available BWTS is packaged in a 40-foot container with electric equipment.

MOL and MHI started engineering work and will install an experimental system with a capacity of 750 meters cubed (about 26,475 feet cubed) per hour on the MOl-owned 8,100 20-foot-eqiuvalent unit container ship MOL Competence this spring.
