Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) is the world’s second largest shipping line. The privately owned company was founded in 1970 in Geneva, Switzerland. It operates worldwide, serving 6 continents and calling at 316 ports.

As of December 2013, MSC operates 475 vessels with a combined capacity of more than 2.3 million TEUs (20-foot-equivalent units). The company employs 29,000 people.

According to Alphaliner, MSC has the largest orderbook of any container carrier, at 41 vessels with a combined capacity of more than 450,000 TEUs as of December 2013.

MSC has announced plans to join fellow major container carriers Maersk Line and CMA CGM, in the P3 Network, an alliance that will allow all three lines to deploy their largest vessels in Asia-Europe trade, while deploying smaller vessels in Trans-Pacific and Trans-Atlantic trade, subject to regulatory approval.
