Maersk Line, the global containerized division of the A.P. Moller-Maersk Group, will start to call Marsaxlokk, Malta, on eastbound trips of the ECUMED service, which sails between Ecuador and Ukraine.
The main commodities on the eastbound route are bananas and other fresh fruits.
Adding the Malta call will reduce transit times and the amount of transshipments to a range of ports that are served via Malta, including locations in Italy, the Adriatic, Libya, Tunisia, Israel, Oman and more. Transit times will be improved between five and seven days, increasing the shelf life of the fruit at the destination, the ocean carrier said.
The first vessel to call at Malta will be the Maersk Buton, voyage 1302, arriving at Marsaxlokk on Jan. 27.
