Independent Container Line

Independent Container Line is a privately-owned steamship line operating on the North Atlantic. Established in 1985, the Richmond, Virginia-based company provides international container transportation between Northern Europe and the East Coast of the United States.

ICL has offices in Chester, Pennsylvania; Wilmington, North Carolina; Antwerp, Belgium; and Liverpool, England. The ocean carrier owns and operates four vessels with a carrying capacity of 9,627 TEUs as of Aug. 15, 2014, according to analyst Alphaliner. ICL services include transport and supply chain service solutions, including warehousing and distribution.

Independent Container Line was the 28h-ranked container carrier in U.S containerized import trade in 2013, with volume of 76,113 TEUs, up 7.4 percent year-over-year, giving it a market share of 0.4 percent. It was No. 30 in U.S. containerized export trade in 2013, with volume of 59,828 TEUs, down 4.8 percent year-over-year, and market share of 0.5 percent. The U.S. ocean container trade via European ports, including transshipments, increased 3.8 percent year-over-year to 4.6 million laden 20-foot-equivalent units in the 12 months ending March 2014, according to PIERS, the data division of JOC Group.
