Hamburg Süd Group is a global shipping and logistics company based in Germany. Formed in 1871, Hamburg Süd is the world’s 11th-largest container shipping line and is one of the leading carriers in the North-South trades. The ocean carrier employs 4491 individuals, and owns a fleet of 103 container ships with a total capacity of 457,000 TEUs.

Hamburg Süd Group posted revenues of 5.3 billion euros in 2013 — down 3.9 percent on a year-on-year basis.

Hamburg Süd was the 16th-ranked container carrier in U.S containerized import trade in 2013, with volume of 313,643 TEUs, down 0.6 percent year-over-year, giving it market share of 1.7 percent. It was No. 14 in U.S. containerized export trade in 2013, with volume of 400,287 TEUs, up 4.3 percent year-over-year and market share of 3.1 percent. Carriers announced GRIs this week for several major trade lanes, all effective on Jan. 15. Spot rates on Drewry Maritime Research’s World Container Index composite index, which measures 11 East-to-West trade lanes, has dropped 23.5 percent in the five weeks since Nov. 6.
