Grimaldi Group

The Grimaldi Group is a private shipping company owned and operated by the Grimaldi family since the company’s establishment in 1947. The Naples, Italy-based company is a fully integrated multinational logistics group specializing in maritime transport of cars, rolling cargo, containers and passengers between North Europe, the Mediterranean, the Baltic Sea, West Africa, and North and South America.

The group operates a fleet of about 100 vessels and has subsidiary companies and branches located in more than 25 countries. Some of the group’s shipping subsidiaries include Atlantic Container Line (ACL), Malta Motorways of the Sea (MMS), Minoan Lines and Finnlines.

Grimaldi Group was the 27th-ranked container carrier in U.S containerized import trade in 2013, with volume of 82,427 TEUs, down 11.3 percent year-over-year, giving it market share of 0.5 percent. It was No. 26 in U.S. containerized export trade in 2013, with volume of 79,137 TEUs, up 6.4 percent year-over-year and market share of 0.6 percent. When Atlantic Container Line in the next couple months introduces the first of five of the world’s largest multipurpose ro-ro/container ships, the symbolism will be stark. The vessels, after all, will carry cargo moving across the Atlantic for shipping sectors heading in opposite directions — the roll-on, roll-off market being a rising star and the containerized trade staring at a sudden, unexpected downturn.
