The Federal Maritime Commission’s commissioners have voted to allow a new agreement with the G6 Alliance to go into effect, permitting the six carriers to deploy more than 50 ships in the trans-Pacific trade, particularly increasing the frequency of vessel port calls on the U.S. East Coast.
Members of the G6 Alliance include APL, Hapag-Lloyd, Hyundai Merchant Marine, MOL, NYK Line and OOCL.
The new partnership is scheduled to begin in May 2013 with six coordinated service loops. Three of the services will transit the Suez Canal, while the remaining three will transit via the Panama Canal.
The FMC will also establish a monitoring program to detect capacity coordination among carriers and agreements operating in the market.
