Eimskip has signed a contract with Maine Port Authority to begin new container service operations out of the recently renovated International Marine Terminal in Portland, according to Maine Gov. Paul R. LePage.
The service will call at Portland every 14 days, starting at the end of March. It replaces a call at the port in Norfolk, Va., with the main objective of shortening transit time between North America and Europe. Howver, Eimskip will continue to receive less-than-containerload shipments in Norfolk and New York.
The Icelandic ocean carrier will also open and operate a warehouse and office in Portland.
IMT was recently modernized with funding from the federal TIGER grant program.
