More modern vessels and slow-steaming will help Singapore container line APL cut carbon exhaust emission by 30 percent by 2015, the carrier says.
APL said its fleet would produce 130 grams of carbon exhaust for every 20-foot equivalent unit of cargo transported one nautical mile within three years time, almost one-third less than the figure recorded by outside auditors in 2009.
APL will deploy 32 new, more fuel-efficient vessels in the next three years. The first two of the new vessels — each with 10,000 TEUs of container-carrying capacity — arrived in December, and two others are scheduled for delivery this month.
“We’re changing the profile of our fleet with larger, more efficient ships that will significantly curb exhaust emissions,” APL President Kenneth Glenn said. “It’s the most effective way we know to make global trade environmentally sustainable.”
