Efforts were under way Monday to extinguish a fire that continued to burn aboard an Antigua and Barbuda-flag container ship off Mumbai harbor, Indian maritime agencies said.
The 42,112-deadweight-ton Amsterdam Bridge caught fire Sunday en route from Jawaharlal Nehru Port (Nhava Sheva) to Sri Lanka’s Colombo port.
“The flames have been contained but not extinguished. A thick plume of smoke continues to emanate from the vessel and fire-fighting as well as cooling operations are on,” Coast Guard officials said.
No injuries or oil spill were reported.
“It is learned that 24 containers out of the 112 on board the vessel contained 45 tons of dangerous cargo,” officials said.
The exact cause of the fire is under investigation.
The Amsterdam Bridge, built in 2009, is reportedly operated by Japanese ocean carrier “K” Line.
