Thomas J. Bethel, president of American Maritime Officers, and William A. Pennella, vice chairman and executive vice president of Crowley Maritime, received the 2010 Admiral of the Ocean Seas awards from the United Seamen's Service.
Richard Haynes, executive director of the Military Sealift Command, was given a special AOTOS recognition plaque for his 34 years as a civilian employee of the Navy.
Crowley and AMO, an affiliate of the Seafarers International Union, were recognized for their role in humanitarian relief services to Haiti after the January earthquake. AMO members crewed many of the U.S.-flag vessels that delivered relief cargo.
Crowley unloaded containers filled with water and meals in the Dominican Republic to be trucked across the border into Haiti. Five maritime union leaders also received plaques for their members' role in transporting relief cargo.
