National Retail Systems opened a 15-acre distribution center in Compton, Calif., to serve retailers and manufacturers who ship through the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.

The facility brings the logistics provider's total distribution space in the area to 1.5 million square feet, all of which is within 10 miles of the harbor.

Also, NRS deploys 115 trucks that meet the emission standards under the ports' clean-trucks program. The drayage fleet has an annual capacity of 70,000 TEUs, and NRS plans to expand the fleet to handle 300,000 TEUs.

NRS offers global logistics services to retailers and manufacturers, including distribution-center bypass, cross-dock and value-added distribution services such as ticketing, pick and pack, labeling, inventory replenishment and warehouse management.

Although U.S. imports are down this year due to the global trade recession, NRS said it is positioning the company for a return to growth in the U.S. import trade.

"It's no secret that the U.S. retail industry is struggling right now, but we are seeing selective growth from customers that are weathering the downturn well and positioning themselves for recovery," said Raymond Wisniewski, NRS president.
