Helsinki-based designer wins first order for spreader-mounted security device

Cargotec won its first commercial contract for a Cargotec Port Security spreader-mounted radiation detection system.

Lockheed Martin will use the CPS spreader-mounted scanning system to complete integration testing of the company's container scanning system.

Helsinki-based Cargotec said the system is designed to meet U.S. requirements for 100 percent inbound container scanning in all ports by 2012.

The CPS system will be used as part of Lockheed Martin's integrated technology solutions portfolio. The CPS system will be installed and tested at a U.S. East Coast port during 2009.

The CPS equipment purchased by Lockheed Martin will feature a ship-to-shore crane spreader outfitted with Cargotec port security technology to scan containers while the spreader is in transit.

Cargotec said movement of the container will not compromise overall terminal productivity. This technology can be installed on crane spreaders, straddle carriers or other mobile equipment, such as on marine vessels engaged in security operations.

Cargotec said the port security system purchased by Lockheed Martin has been awarded Qualified Anti-Terrorism Technology Designation from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

The company said the system received the QATT designation following the successful Department of Energy Oak Ridge evaluation, in which its spreader solution demonstrated 100-percent accuracy, with zero false positives and zero false negatives.
