Carrier brings tunnel boring machine to Russia for Olympics site construction

Fesco Logistics on Dec. 28 delivered a single piece of construction equipment weighing 100 tons to Novorossiysk, Russia.

Fesco will now transship the boom-type roadheader used for mechanized tunneling in hard and abrasive rock formations to Sochi, Russia, for construction of the site of the 2014 winter Olympics.

Fesco, a division of Seattle-based Fesco North America, loaded the equipment onto a trailer built by MAFI Transport-Systeme, secured it with 15 chain lashings in Baltimore, carried it via roll-on, roll-off vessel to Derince, Turkey and then transshipped it to Novorossiysk, Russia.

Fesco is using a SaviTrak GPS sensor unit to determine the location of the equipment at any time. Savi Networks provides automated wireless monitoring to improve shipment visibility and security across multiple transportation modes including ocean vessels, truck and rail.

The XXII Olympic Winter Games will be held from Feb. 7 to Feb. 23, 2014. The International Olympic Committee selected the host city, Sochi, Russia, on July 4, 2007. This will be the first time the Russian Federation will host the Winter Olympics; the Soviet Union hosted the 1980 Summer Games in Moscow.
