Jebel Ali Deploys ARL-Shipping.com Berthing Planner and Resource Demand Manager

JOC Staff |
HONG KONG, 4th April 2011 – Jebel Ali planning team uses Berthing Planner for graphical planning of vessel calls and quay cranes in space (berths and cable reach) and time while Resource Demand Manager automatically calculates volume of land-side or sea-side resources for executing operation of the upcoming shifts. Need for resources like cranes, trucks, gates or tugs are calculated per timeslot based on the changing ETA and ETD of arriving vessels, and rules defined per line, service, vessel or vessel type, and based on productivity and cargo volumes.

DP World, Jebel Ali’s Director of Planning, Pedro Caballero, states “The rules-based automatic resource demand calculation of the tool allows us to focus our manual planning expertise on exceptions and leave most of every-day resource planning to the Resource Demand Manager, as this automatically taps into our vessels’ ETA/ETD”. ARL’s director and CEO, René Bendt, adds: Even we believe the rules based resource planning will add value to almost any size of terminal, we are happy to see it in use with a mega-terminal like Jebel Ali”.

The berthing plan, quay crane assignments and resource demand are adjusted during the workday, as updated ETA/ETDs are received from the shipping line customers. By establishing the current productivity of active quay cranes, the vessel ETDs are projected automatically and used for onwards and continuously updated planning. The resource planning is depending on vessels’ ETA/ETD as well as labour shifts set. Concrete physical resources like cranes and trucks are assigned in the tool, and data is passed electronically to a labour management system for assigning concrete labour resources.

It is the intention, that the Jebel Ali Marine Department additionally start using the Resource Demand Manager during 2011 for planning of harbour tugs and pilots/pilot boats, and in particular the “moves-to-go” feature auto-adjusting the ETD by the current quay crane performance, will assist in providing continuous up-to-date timings for assigning departure harbour tugs.
