JAXPORT CCO Receives Chamber Honor

Jacksonville Port Authority (JAXPORT) Chief Commerical Officer Roy Schleicher has been honored with this year's International Business Leader Award by the Jacksonville Regional Chamber of Commerce, the second largest Chamber in the U.S.

Schleicher was chosen for the honor based on his contribution to the growth of international business in the Northeast Florida region and for his ongoing commitment to development of the port and related industries. Since joining JAXPORT in July 2001, Schleicher has been responsible for all facets of national and international trade development and market share enhancement for the port. He oversees the optimization of the terminal facilities by increasing cargo throughput for existing tenants and developing new cargo and business opportunities. He was highly instrumental in securing a major contract with MOL for the TraPac Container Terminal at Dames Point which opened in January 2009 and is also heavily involved with the development of future terminals, such as the Hanjin Container Terminal scheduled for completion in 2013. During Schleicher's tenure at JAXPORT, total annual cargo tonnage has grown almost 30 percent and port revenue has grown nearly 70 percent.

In presenting Schleicher with the International Business Leader Award, Jacksonville Mayor John Peyton thanked Schleicher for allowing North Florida to benefit from his 40 years of maritime industry experience.

Roy Schleicher is celebrating his 40th year in the Maritime Industry. He was recently appointed as Chief Commercial Office for the Jacksonville Port Authority after serving for 8 years as the seaport's Senior Director of Trade Development and Global Marketing.

Since July 2001, Roy has been responsible for all facets of national and international trade development and market share enhancement for the port. Roy oversees the optimization of the terminal facilities by increasing cargo throughput for existing tenants and developing new cargo and business opportunities. He was highly instrumental in securing a major contract with MOL for the TraPac Container Terminal at Dames Point and is also heavily involved with the development of future terminals, such as the Hanjin Container Terminal scheduled for completion in 2012.

During Roy's tenure at JAXPORT, total annual cargo tonnage has grown almost 30% and port revenue has grown 68%. JAXPORT facilities handled 656,805 vehicle units in fiscal year 2008, a record for the port solidifying JAXPORT's place as the 2nd largest vehicle handling port in the nation.

Roy was named the "Maritime Person of the Year" by the Propeller Club - Port of Jacksonville in 2006. Also in 2006, Roy was recognized as a Transportation Leader in Florida by the Florida Shipper. Roy serves on the Board of the Propeller Club of Jacksonville and formerly held the position of President of the Propeller Club of Baltimore. He has served as President of the Maryland Maritime Association and was an active member of the Baltimore Traffic Club. He is also involved in and supports maritime-related charity campaigns and non-profit organizations.

Prior to working at the Jacksonville Port Authority, Roy was the Director of Marketing for the Maryland Port Administration. During his forty year career, he has held various management positions at Maher Terminals, Hale Intermodal, NSCSA (America) and US Navigation.

Roy lives with his wife in Atlantic Beach. Roy has two children and six grandchildren.
