Nicaragua Receives $39.2 Million Loan to Improve Road Transportation

Nicaragua was recently approved for a $39.2 million loan by the Inter-American Development Bank to improve the efficiency and safety of its transportation system.

The money is intended to help reduce vehicle operating costs and accident rates, increase travel speeds, conduct environmental studies, maintain roads and promote safety.

A major component includes the improvement of 44.6 kilometers (about 27.7 miles) of road from La Paz Centro-Malpaisillo, as well as the Miralagos-Cuyali highway.

The country’s roads are characterized by poor conditions, translating into high transportation costs, which inhibit the country’s economic growth, the bank said.
