David Cockroft, who has been general secretary of the International Transport Workers’ Federation since 1993, will retire at the end of May 2013, when he reaches 60 years of age.
Stephen Cotton, the current ITF maritime coordinator, was appointed acting general secretary by the ITF executive board at their meeting in Copenhagen, Denmark, today.
Cockroft said that his retirement next year will allow Cotton to establish relations with every part of the organization prior to the 43rd congress in 2014. They will work together until then to ensure a smooth transition.
