The Ohio Department of Transportation today announced the final three teams that will compete for an estimated $330 million contract to design, construct and finance the second eastbound I-90 Innerbelt Bridge in Cleveland and demolish the existing one.
It is the first time in Ohio’s history that state transportation officials are pursuing a public-private partnership. ODOT is asking qualified teams to finance part of the construction costs, which will then be paid back by ODOT over a fixed period of time, along with finance charges.
The agency is in the midst of replacing the current bridge with two new bridges: one to carry westbound traffic, the other to carry eastbound traffic. When both bridges are complete, ODOT will have invested nearly $620 million over a six-year period. Crews are currently working on the westbound bridge.
The three teams selected to prepare formal proposals are contractor Kokosing Construction Company with designer Michael Baker Jr.; contractors Trumbull Corporation, The Great Lakes Construction Company and The Ruhlin Company with designer URS Corporation; and contractor Walsh Construction with designer HDR Engineering.
The preferred team is likely to be selected this summer.
