The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials’ board of directors voted to elect Michael Lewis, Rhode Island’s transportation director, as president for 2013. Mike Hancock, secretary of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, was elected vice president.

In his role, Lewis will emphasize the deployment of new technologies, the implementation of reforms included in Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act and leading AASHTO’s efforts to pass the next surface transportation reauthorization bill.

His presidency coincides with the retirement of three AASHTO executives next year, including John Horsley, executive director; Jack Basso, director or program finance and management, and Tony Kane, director of engineering and technical services.
