The European Union has allocated funding from the TEN-T Programme, under the 2011 TEN-T Annual Call, for two rail infrastructure projects in Italy and Austria.
The EU will finance more than 7 million euros (about US$9.5 million) for two rail infrastructure works in Genoa and Bologna, Italy.
The first project, which will receive $6.8 million, will separate Genoa’s local and regional traffic flows from long-distance ones for both freight and passenger lines, to streamline traffic, increase capacity and foster multimodality.
The second project, which will receive $2.7 million, supports the construction of a 4.2-kilometer-long, high-speed and high-capacity rail section in Bologna. Several underpasses will be upgraded as part of the project, and tracks, electricity, signaling and other equipment will be deployed.
The projects are scheduled for completion in December 2014 and September 2014, respectively.
The EU has also allocated $5.4 million for the future expansion of the Wolfurt rail freight terminal in Austria. The project, which is scheduled for completion in December 2014, will complete the planning studies needed before upgrade work can begin at the facility. In particular, it includes studies on construction of facilities for intermodal transport, equipment for general cargo and devices for conventional freight transport.
