Samskip, DSM Develop Lightweight Container

Logistics provider Samskip Multimodal and scientific firm Royal DSM N.V. have developed a new lightweight container, called DSM HighQ™.

The companies have been developing the container, which is intended to be 20 percent lighter than its steel counterparts, since 2009. The weight reduction is achieved from composite panels that replace the commonly used corrugated steel.

In total, three prototypes have been successfully tested. The companies said the key advantage of the new container is cost efficiency from fuel savings during transport or payload increases where weight limitations apply.

Samskip recently shortened its name from “Samskip Multimodal Container Logistics” to “Samskip Multimodal” to highlight its growth from a container logistics provider to a multimodal logistics provider.
