NORTH BERGEN, NJ
- ILA Locals in the Port of New York and New Jersey plan a noon-time rally on Friday, January 6th, 2012 outside the offices of Global Terminals, 302 Port Jersey Boulevard, Jersey City, New Jersey to promote keeping good-paying jobs in this Port. The ILA will address growing concerns over terminal management wanting to implement new technology that will reduce ILA employment in the coming years.

ILA International and District officers will participate in the rally and have invited ILA members who are on their lunch breaks at Global Terminals or those not working on Friday to join them to demonstrate solidarity as the ILA prepares to begin negotiations on a new Master Contract sometime in the coming months. The current Master Contract expires on September 30, 2012.

The ILA is instructing all its members not want to interfere with working operations at Global Terminals and for members to work their assigned hours on Friday.

Global Terminals and Container Services, LLC announced in late November its intention to expand its current New Jersey terminal which would “include the introduction of new technology throughout the expanded Global Terminal.”

The introduction of new technology must be jointly negotiated and the ILA will continue to fight to keep our jobs. The ILA rally on Friday is intended to send a clear message that it will protect hard-won gains of the past.

The ILA fully support efforts to make ports more productive and is open, through negotiations, to examine new technology and its impact on jobs and the industry. The ILA will not allow management to grab higher profits at the expense of ILA jobs. The ILA is currently conducting economic and labor studies in preparation for Master Contract negotiations. The ILA views this information rally on Friday as a means to demonstrate to its employers it is serious about protecting jurisdictions, jobs and the future.

The rally is scheduled from 12 p.m. to 12:50 p.m., at a designated area at Global Terminals, 302 Port Jersey Boulevard in Jersey City (in the City of Bayonne), New Jersey.
