House Passes Food Safety Bill

The Journal of Commerce Online - News Story
Legislation would require importers to register annually

The House on Thursday passed H.R. 283-142 a bill that tightens safety standards for domestic and imported food products.

The Food Safety Enhancement Act or 2009 calls for unique identification codes for food facilities, importers and customs brokers. Importers will be required to register annually.

The bill also calls for country of origin labels for all imported food, and calls on the Food and Drug Administration to form a corps of inspectors to inspect foreign food facilities.
