DOT Grants $98 Million in Stimulus for Shipyards

The Journal of Commerce Online - News Story

Seventy U.S. shipyards will split $98 million in economic stimulus grants announced Tuesday by the Department of Transportation and the Maritime Administration.

The larger ARRA grant recipients include:
-- Aker Philadelphia Shipyards, $2.3 million for training;
-- Washburn & Doughty, East Boothbay, Maine $2.6 million for a new drydock;
-- LEEVAC Shipyards, Jennings, La., $3.7 million for two cranes and equipment; and
-- Lyon Shipyard, Norfolk, Va., $4.5 million for drydock enhancement.

The entire list may be found online at http://www.marad.dot.gov/about_us_landing_page/marad_recovery_act/recovery.htm

This list is the second one published by the agency. Marad inadvertently released a similar list prematurely, and the office of Secretary Ray LaHood withdrew it July 22. DOT officials said that Marad had not followed the economic guidelines set out in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The mixup led to the transfer of David S. Matsuda to be Marad’s deputy administrator. Matsuda had been DOT assistant secretary for planning.
