General Fund appropriations to help maintain Highway Trust Fund

The Obama administration has budgeted $73.3 billion for the U.S. Department of Transportation in 2010. That includes $1 billion for high-speed rail and $865 million to upgrade the nation’s air traffic control system.

The 2010 budget is slightly higher than the $71.5 billion already enacted for DOT in 2009.

All federal agencies under DOT received the same or slightly higher budget levels in 2010 compared with 2009 funding, including $2.7 billion for the Federal Railroad Administration, $550 million for the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, $521 million for the Maritime Administration, and $41.8 million for the Federal Highway Administration.

The Office of Management and Budget said the 2010 budget assumes new discretionary appropriations from the General Fund to maintain baseline levels for the Highway Trust Fund.
