U.S. trans-Pacific containerized imports from Southeast Asia jumped by 6.7 percent in January 2013 to 150,879 20-foot equivalent containers from 141,426 in January 2012, according to preliminary data from PIERS, a JOC sister company.

Containerized exports from the Indian subcontinent and the Middle East to Far East Asia continued to fall steeply in January, dropping almost 25 percent from the same month a year ago, according to data from Container Trades Statistics, Ltd. Export volume in this trade lane was also down in 2012 by 9.3 percent over 2011. Other regions showed increases or less dramatic decreases, indicating a possible shift in ranking of trade partners over time.
