In seasonally adjusted terms, Australia had a goods and services trade deficit of A$129 million(about US$141.3 million) in July, after posting a A$243 million surplus in June, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Containerized exports from Europe to Far East Asia increased year-over-year for the fifth straight month in June 2013, according to data from Container Trades Statistics. Exports rose to all regions except the Indian Subcontinent and the Middle East; volume in that trade fell more than 2 percent. The biggest regional increase was seen in shipments from Europe to Far East Asia.

Containerized exports from Far East Asia to all reported regions, with the exception of South and Central America, experienced growth in June 2013, according to data from Container Trades Statistics Ltd. Exports to the Indian subcontinent and the Middle East as well as Sub-Saharan Africa experienced double-digit growth. Latin America saw the only dip in Far East Asian export volume, although it was a small decline. “Global trades have continued to display promising signs in June, indicating that ocean carriers are starting to capitalize on a rise in demand for containerized cargo,” CTS said in a recent release.

Genesee & Wyoming, a major owner of short line and regional railroads in North America with significant operations in Australia as well, saw more positive results in July, with its traffic increasing month-to-month, year-over-year, and pro forma from volume before the Rail America acquisition. Its 2013 numbers, when compared to 2012, show extremely large increases because of its acquisition of RailAmerica. However, July 2013’s volume still was higher than the combined total of G&W and RailAmerica’s separate numbers for July 2012 by 8.8 percent.
